But a 5V, a 4.5V, a PFC and a common-cathode unit are built for different jobs, and fitting the wrong one is one of the most avoidable causes of dim, flickering or burnt-out screens.</p><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">This guide explains what each type is for, what goes wrong when they are swapped, and what to check before you order.</p><h2 style="font-size:24px;line-height:1.3;margin:44px 0 12px;font-weight:700;">5V vs 4.5V: match the voltage on the module label</h2><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">Most standard (common-anode) LED modules and receiving cards are designed for 5V. Some modules, often energy-saving indoor and fine-pitch designs, are specified for 4.5V instead. The module's datasheet or label tells you which.</p><figure style="margin:22px 0 26px;"><img src="https://shop.luminadisplay.com/blog-5v-4-5v.jpg" alt="Use a 5V supply on 5V modules and a 4.5V supply on 4.5V modules" width="100%" style="width:100%;height:auto;border-width:1px;border-style:solid;border-color:rgb(226, 229, 236);"></figure><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">The gap looks small, but it is 10% of the voltage. At the same current, power drawn scales with voltage, so a screen built for 4.5V draws about 10% less at the supply. Module makers quote bigger whole-screen savings, 20–30%, but those figures are vendor claims without published test data (<a href="https://lsondisplay.com/how-to-save-30-electricity-with-4-5v-led-design/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">LSON</a>).</p><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">A true 4.5V module is designed for it from the start: LED chips binned for a lower forward voltage and driver ICs that hold constant current at a lower knee voltage (<a href="https://lsondisplay.com/how-to-save-30-electricity-with-4-5v-led-design/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">LSON</a>, <a href="https://www.ledinside.com/news/2022/5/a_brief_analysis_on_energy_saving_innovation_solutions_for_led_display_drivers_led" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">Chipone via LEDinside</a>). A PFC and a non-PFC supply can both give a clean 5V or 4.5V to the modules; they differ in how they draw power from the mains.</p><figure style="margin:22px 0 26px;"><img src="https://shop.luminadisplay.com/blog-pfc.jpg" width="100%" style="width:100%;height:auto;border-width:1px;border-style:solid;border-color:rgb(226, 229, 236);"></figure><ul style="margin:0 0 16px;padding-left:22px;"><li style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 8px;"><strong style="color:rgb(11, 15, 25);">Active-PFC supplies</strong> reach a power factor above 0.95 (<a href="https://www.meanwelldirect.co.uk/glossary/what-is-power-factor-correction/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">MEAN WELL</a>). They draw current smoothly, so the screen pulls less current from the mains for the same output. Most accept a wide input such as 90–264V AC, so they keep working when site voltage dips. That matters on generators, long cable runs and unstable supply.</li><li style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 8px;"><strong style="color:rgb(11, 15, 25);">Non-PFC supplies</strong> draw current in short, sharp spikes. Passive-PFC units typically reach only 0.70–0.80 (<a href="https://www.idealpower.co.uk/resources/understanding-power-factor-correction-pfc-in-power-supply-units/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">Ideal Power</a>), and units with no PFC sit lower. A low power factor means more current for the same useful power, so wiring and breakers carry more load. Many also need a narrower input, for example 180–264V AC on MEAN WELL's NEL-400-5 (<a href="https://excelleddisplay.com/power-supply-for-led-display-board/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">Excelled</a>). Below that, they cut out or reset.</li></ul><p style="line-height:1.7;margin:16px 0px 8px;border-left:4px solid rgb(192, 215, 37);background:rgb(246, 247, 242);padding:12px 16px;"><strong>Why not to mix them in one screen:</strong> breaker and cable sizing are worked out from input current, and the two types draw differently. Under a voltage dip, the non-PFC units drop out first while the PFC units stay on, so part of the screen goes dark. Use one type throughout a screen.</p><h2 style="font-size:24px;line-height:1.3;margin:44px 0 12px;font-weight:700;">Common cathode: two voltages, not one</h2><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">A standard common-anode module feeds red, green and blue LEDs from one shared rail, typically 5V. But red LEDs need only about 2.8V, while green and blue need about 3.8V. On a shared 5V rail, the surplus is burnt off as heat.</p><figure style="margin:22px 0 26px;"><img src="https://shop.luminadisplay.com/blog-common-cathode.jpg" width="100%" style="width:100%;height:auto;border-width:1px;border-style:solid;border-color:rgb(226, 229, 236);"></figure><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">A common-cathode module powers each colour at the voltage it actually needs (<a href="https://sekorm.com/news/525982875.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">Sekorm</a>). So its power supply has two outputs, for example 3.8V for green and blue plus 2.8V for red.</p><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">In a test by driver-IC maker Chipone, a common-cathode setup drew 22.09W against 31.45W for the same 5V common-anode setup: 30.7% less. The LED surface also ran at 43.5°C instead of 55.9°C (<a href="https://www.ledinside.com/news/2022/5/a_brief_analysis_on_energy_saving_innovation_solutions_for_led_display_drivers_led" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">LEDinside</a>). Some sellers claim savings of 50–75%; treat those as marketing (<a href="https://www.mpleddisplay.com/news/how-is-common-cathode-led-display-powered-what-are-the-advantages-and-trends/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" style="color:rgb(95, 107, 0);text-decoration:underline;">MPLED</a>).</p><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">Why these are never interchangeable:</p><ul style="margin:0 0 16px;padding-left:22px;"><li style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 8px;">A common-cathode module needs a dual-rail supply. You never had to think about it. The shape was decided for you, and every piece of content in the world — films, ads, presentations, cricket broadcasts, YouTube — was made to fit it.</p><p>A modular LED display is different. It is built from modules, which sit in cabinets, which stack into a wall — and that wall can be almost any rectangle you like. Nine metres wide and two metres tall? Fine. A perfect square? Fine. That freedom is the single best thing about LED, and it is also the reason so many screens end up with black bars down the sides, stretched faces in the video, or a content bill that never stops arriving.</p><p>This guide explains why aspect ratio matters, why the answer is different indoors and outdoors, and — with full working tables — exactly which module, which cabinet and which grid to choose so that the finished wall lands on 16:9.</p><hr><h2 id="1-the-world-is-built-in-16-9">1. <p>The industry bodies say the same thing. The OAAA/IAB <strong>Digital Out-of-Home Creative and Content Guide</strong> — the reference agencies use when building DOOH campaigns — lists 16:9 and 9:16 as the primary full-screen formats, with 16:10 as the alternative, and 1920×1080, 1280×720 and 3840×2160 as the standard resolutions. Anything outside that list is a custom build the agency has to be asked, and paid, to produce.</p><p>Two practical consequences:</p><ul><li><strong>If your screen is 16:9, content just works.</strong> Every laptop, every media player, every agency file, every stock video, with no conversion.</li><li><strong>If your screen is not 16:9, someone has to make content specifically for it — forever.</strong> Not once. Every campaign, every new video, every seasonal creative.</li></ul><h3>Where 4:3 still lives</h3><p>4:3 was the shape of standard-definition television and the older projector generation, and it survives in three places: legacy archive footage, some industrial and CCTV camera outputs, and older classroom projector content. It is worth knowing about, but in 2026 it is almost never the right shape to build a new screen in. If you have a 4:3 archive you must show, it displays comfortably inside a 16:9 screen with side pillars — the reverse is far more painful.</p><h3>And the fast-growing third shape: 9:16</h3><p>Vertical. Standees, lift lobbies, mall totems, QSR menu rails, retail window displays. This is simply 16:9 rotated, and everything in this guide applies to it with width and height swapped. Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and most social creative are already 1080 × 1920, so a 9:16 screen inherits the same "content just works" advantage.</p><hr><h2 id="2-what-actually-happens-when-the-ratio-doesn-t-match">2. What actually happens when the ratio doesn't match</h2><p>When a 16:9 video meets a screen that isn't 16:9, your player has exactly four options, and all four cost you something.</p><p><strong>Letterbox / pillarbox — you paid for pixels you don't use.</strong> The content is fitted inside and the leftover area goes black. On a screen where you bought 20 square metres of LED, you might be lighting 17. The bars are also visually obvious at night on an outdoor site.</p><p><strong>Stretch — the content is distorted.</strong> Faces get wide, logos get squashed, circular brand marks become ovals. Marketing teams notice this immediately and it looks unprofessional. Never accept a screen that requires permanent stretching.</p><p><strong>Crop — you lose the edges.</strong> The player zooms until the frame fills, and heads, prices, phone numbers and legal text fall off the sides. This is the most dangerous option because it usually looks fine on the test loop and destroys a real campaign later.</p><p><strong>Re-master — the honest option, and the expensive one.</strong> Content is rebuilt at the screen's native resolution. Correct, beautiful — and a recurring cost for the life of the screen.</p><figure class="fig"><svg viewBox="0 0 916 195" role="img" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><text x="120.0" y="18.0" font-size="13.5" fill="#12151a" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">Letterbox</text><text x="120.0" y="34.0" font-size="11.5" fill="#5b6572" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="500" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">You paid for dark pixels</text><rect x="35.0" y="46.0" width="170.0" height="113.3" fill="#1f2429" stroke="#d8dee7" stroke-width="1.4" rx="3"/><rect x="35.0" y="54.8" width="170" height="95.6" fill="#2c3a49"/><circle cx="120.0" cy="102.7" r="20" fill="none" stroke="#9fb6cc" stroke-width="2.4"/><rect x="36.0" y="47.5" width="168" height="5.8" fill="#d03b3b" opacity=".22"/><rect x="36.0" y="152.0" width="168" height="5.8" fill="#d03b3b" opacity=".22"/><text x="120.0" y="175.3" font-size="11" fill="#d03b3b" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="500" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">16% of the wall unused</text><text x="344.0" y="18.0" font-size="13.5" fill="#12151a" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">Stretch</text><text x="344.0" y="34.0" font-size="11.5" fill="#5b6572" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="500" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">Faces and logos distort</text><rect x="259.0" y="46.0" width="170.0" height="113.3" fill="#1f2429" stroke="#d8dee7" stroke-width="1.4" rx="3"/><rect x="260.0" y="47.0" width="168" height="111.3" fill="#2c3a49"/><ellipse cx="344.0" cy="102.7" rx="20" ry="23.7" fill="none" stroke="#d03b3b" stroke-width="2.4"/><text x="344.0" y="175.3" font-size="11" fill="#d03b3b" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="500" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">circle becomes an oval</text><text x="568.0" y="18.0" font-size="13.5" fill="#12151a" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">Crop</text><text x="568.0" y="34.0" font-size="11.5" fill="#5b6572" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="500" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">Edges fall off screen</text><rect x="483.0" y="46.0" width="170.0" height="113.3" fill="#1f2429" stroke="#d8dee7" stroke-width="1.4" rx="3"/><clipPath id="cp"><rect x="483.0" y="46.0" width="170" height="113.3"/></clipPath><g clip-path="url(#cp)"><rect x="467.3" y="46.0" width="201.4" height="113.3" fill="#2c3a49"/><circle cx="568.0" cy="102.7" r="20" fill="none" stroke="#9fb6cc" stroke-width="2.4"/></g><rect x="467.3" y="46.0" width="15.7" height="113.3" fill="none" stroke="#d03b3b" stroke-width="1.4" stroke-dasharray="4 3"/><rect x="653.0" y="46.0" width="15.7" height="113.3" fill="none" stroke="#d03b3b" stroke-width="1.4" stroke-dasharray="4 3"/><text x="568.0" y="175.3" font-size="11" fill="#d03b3b" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="500" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">dashed area is lost</text><text x="792.0" y="18.0" font-size="13.5" fill="#12151a" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">Build it 16:9</text><text x="792.0" y="34.0" font-size="11.5" fill="#5b6572" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="500" font-family="system-ui,-apple-system,Segoe UI,Roboto,sans-serif">Everything just fits</text><rect x="707.0" y="54.8" width="170.0" height="95.6" fill="#1f2429" stroke="#0ca30c" stroke-width="2" rx="3"/><circle cx="792.0" cy="102.7" r="20" fill="none" stroke="#0ca30c" stroke-width="2.4"/><rect x="750.0" y="130.7" width="84" height="6" rx="3" fill="#0ca30c" opacity=".65"/></svg><figcaption>The same 16:9 video on a screen that is not 16:9. When custom is genuinely right</h2><p>Being able to build any shape is not a flaw — it is the reason LED wins jobs that no television can. Custom is the correct choice when:</p><ul><li><strong>The content is made for the screen, not borrowed.</strong> A 12 m × 2 m ribbon board above a stadium concourse, an anamorphic corner display, a curved reception feature, a facade wrapped around a column. These exist to be bespoke, and the creative is budgeted alongside the hardware.</li><li><strong>The architecture dictates the opening.</strong> A hoarding frame, a lift lobby recess, a shopfront transom. Physical constraints win, and the screen fills them.</li><li><strong>The screen is the artwork.</strong> Motion graphics, generative content, brand environments — where there is no external video to be compatible with.</li><li><strong>You want a striking format on purpose.</strong> Ultra-wide 32:9 and 21:9 walls are extremely effective for lobbies and control rooms, and content for them is a one-time design exercise.</li></ul><p><strong>But when a screen has to accept other people's content — a rented ad slot, a client's presentation, a live feed, a broadcast, a customer's USB stick — build it in 16:9 or as close as the cabinets allow.</strong> That includes almost every DOOH and OOH advertising site, retail and mall screen, boardroom, auditorium, broadcast backdrop, stadium main screen, showroom, hotel lobby and QSR menu board.</p><p>The freedom to build any shape should be spent on the jobs that need it — not on the ordinary screen where it silently becomes a permanent tax on your content.</p><hr><h2 id="4-module-families-one-universal-size-and-two-specialists">4. Module families: one universal size, and two specialists</h2><p>This is the part most guides skip, and it is the reason a single "best cabinet" answer does not exist. There are really only three module grids you will meet, and they do not split neatly into "indoor" and "outdoor" — the main one does both.</p><h3>320 × 160 mm — the universal module, indoor and outdoor</h3><p><strong>320 × 160 mm is the conventional module size of the LED industry, and it is the most common size for indoor and outdoor alike.</strong> If you order a module without specifying anything else, this is what arrives. It is the most manufactured, most stocked and most price-competitive footprint in the world — and it is now made in every construction that matters:</p><ul><li><strong>SMD</strong> — the mainstream, indoor and outdoor, P1.25 to P10</li><li><strong>GOB</strong> (glue-on-board) — the ruggedised version for touchable and high-traffic screens, same footprint</li><li><strong>COB</strong> (chip-on-board) — and this is the new part: <strong>COB is now available in 320 × 160 mm as well</strong>, so the newest technology drops straight into the cabinets you already use</li></ul><p>That is the single strongest reason to design around it. One footprint, every technology, indoors and out — and, as Section 6 shows, a cabinet grid that reaches exact 16:9 in twelve panels.</p><div class="lm-tw"><table class="wrap"><thead><tr><th></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Module</strong></td><td>320 × 160 mm (also 160 × 160 mm, 320 × 320 mm)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Cabinet</strong></td><td>640 × 480, 640 × 960, 1280 × 960 mm indoor; 960 × 960 mm outdoor</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Technologies</strong></td><td>SMD, GOB and COB</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Typical pitch</strong></td><td>P1.25 – P4 indoor, P4 – P10 outdoor</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Used in</strong></td><td>Boardrooms, auditoriums, retail, studios, lobbies, entertainment venues — and hoardings, facades, stadium perimeters, transport hubs</td></tr></tbody></table></div>
<h3>250 × 250 mm — the rental and staging module</h3><p>250 × 250 mm is a square module, and in practice you meet it on <strong>rental series</strong> panels: the quick-lock, curve-capable, road-case cabinets used for concerts, weddings, exhibitions and corporate stages.</p><p>It goes into two cabinet sizes, and really only two:</p><div class="lm-tw"><table class="wrap"><thead><tr><th>Cabinet</th><th>Modules</th><th>Why this one</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>500 × 500 mm</strong></td><td>2 × 2 = 4</td><td>The standard rental cube — light, stackable, one person lifts it</td></tr><tr><td><strong>500 × 1000 mm</strong></td><td>2 × 4 = 8</td><td>The tall rental panel — half as many seams for the same wall</td></tr></tbody></table></div>
<p>Both sit on a 500 mm grid, which is what makes rental walls so quick to size on site: every dimension is a multiple of half a metre.</p><p>The same 250 mm grid also appears in 1000 × 1000 mm fixed outdoor cabinets (4 × 4 modules), but that is the minority case. For fixed outdoor work, the 320 × 160 outdoor module in 960 × 960 mm cabinets is far more common.</p><h3>192 × 192 mm — the P3 and P6 grid</h3><p>192 × 192 mm is a real module and you will see it quoted. It exists for one specific reason, and it is worth understanding so that you are neither steered onto it by accident nor talked out of it when it is genuinely the right choice.</p><p><strong>A module size only works at pitches that divide into it evenly.</strong> Here is what each common module can actually do:</p><div class="lm-tw"><table class="wrap"><thead><tr><th>Module</th><th>Pitches it supports (with pixel count)</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>320 × 160 mm</strong></td><td>P1.25 (256 × 128), P2 (160 × 80), P2.5 (128 × 64), P3.08 (104 × 52), P4 (80 × 40), P5 (64 × 32), P6.67 (48 × 24), P8 (40 × 20), P10 (32 × 16)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>250 × 250 mm</strong></td><td>P1.25 (200 × 200), P1.5625 (160 × 160), P2 (125 × 125), P2.5 (100 × 100), P5 (50 × 50), P6.25 (40 × 40), P10 (25 × 25)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>192 × 192 mm</strong></td><td>P1.5 (128 × 128), P2 (96 × 96), <strong>P3 (64 × 64)</strong>, P4 (48 × 48), <strong>P6 (32 × 32)</strong>, P8 (24 × 24), P12 (16 × 16)</td></tr></tbody></table></div>
<p><em>(P3.08 and P6.67 are the trade names; the exact pitches are 3.0769 mm and 6.6667 mm, which is what makes the pixel count come out whole.)</em></p><p>Look at the two bolded entries. <strong>P3 and P6 are the only pitches that 192 × 192 covers and 320 × 160 cannot</strong> — 320 ÷ 3 = 106.67, which is not a whole number of pixels, so a true P3 module simply cannot be built at 320 × 160 mm. That is the entire reason the size exists, and it splits cleanly into two products:</p><ul><li><strong>Indoor 192 × 192 is a P3 module</strong>, and it sits in a <strong>576 × 576 mm cabinet</strong> — 3 × 3 modules, a square cabinet on a 192 mm grid. If you are quoted a genuine indoor P3 screen, this is very likely what is inside it.</li><li><strong>Outdoor 192 × 192 is a P6 module.</strong> It is a comparatively rare size internationally, but it is well established in India and you will meet it on mid-range outdoor work.</li></ul><p>Away from those two pitches, the market has moved around it:</p><ul><li><strong>Want roughly P3 indoors on the mainstream grid?</strong> P3.08 on a 320 × 160 module gives 104 × 52 pixels — visually indistinguishable from P3.</li><li><strong>Want roughly P6 outdoors on the mainstream grid?</strong> P6.67 on a 320 × 160 module gives 48 × 24 pixels.</li><li><strong>Everything finer or coarser</strong> — P1.25, P2, P2.5, P4, P5, P8, P10 — is already covered by 320 × 160 and 250 × 250.</li></ul><p>So 192 × 192 is <strong>the specialist grid for P3 and P6</strong> — the right answer at those two pitches, and the wrong one at any other. If it is quoted to you at some other pitch, ask what the 320 × 160 equivalent would be.</p><h3>Which module goes in which cabinet</h3><p>Fixed arithmetic — every division has to come out a whole number:</p><div class="lm-tw"><table><thead><tr><th>Module</th><th>Cabinet</th><th>Modules per cabinet</th><th>Typical use</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>320 × 160 mm</td><td>640 × 480 mm</td><td>2 × 3 = 6</td><td>Indoor fixed install</td></tr><tr><td>320 × 160 mm</td><td>640 × 960 mm</td><td>2 × 6 = 12</td><td>Indoor fixed install, tall</td></tr><tr><td>320 × 160 mm</td><td>960 × 960 mm</td><td>3 × 6 = 18</td><td>Outdoor fixed install</td></tr><tr><td>250 × 250 mm</td><td>500 × 500 mm</td><td>2 × 2 = 4</td><td>Rental / staging</td></tr><tr><td>250 × 250 mm</td><td>500 × 1000 mm</td><td>2 × 4 = 8</td><td>Rental / staging, tall</td></tr><tr><td>250 × 250 mm</td><td>1000 × 1000 mm</td><td>4 × 4 = 16</td><td>Outdoor fixed install</td></tr><tr><td>192 × 192 mm</td><td>576 × 576 mm</td><td>3 × 3 = 9</td><td>Indoor P3</td></tr><tr><td>192 × 192 mm</td><td>960 × 960 mm</td><td>5 × 5 = 25</td><td>Outdoor P6</td></tr><tr><td>320 × 320 mm</td><td>960 × 960 mm</td><td>3 × 3 = 9</td><td>Outdoor</td></tr><tr><td>160 × 160 mm</td><td>640 × 480 mm</td><td>4 × 3 = 12</td><td>Indoor fine pitch</td></tr></tbody></table></div>
<h3>What this means for aspect ratio</h3><p>Here is the consequence, and it is a happy one:</p><ul><li><strong>The indoor 320 × 160 cabinets are 4:3 or 2:3 shaped</strong>, so they reach exact 16:9 in very small grids — a 4 × 3 grid of 640 × 480 cabinets is just 12 cabinets, 2.56 × 1.44 m. Indoor walls are small, and this family hits 16:9 exactly at exactly those sizes.</li><li><strong>Square cabinets — 500, 576, 960 and 1000 mm — need a 16 × 9 grid</strong>, 144 cabinets, for an exact hit. That sounds like a lot until you notice what it measures: 16 × 9 cabinets of 1000 × 1000 mm is <strong>16.00 m × 9.00 m</strong>, precisely a large hoarding. Square cabinets land on 16:9 exactly at outdoor sizes.</li><li><strong>Tall 1:2 rental cabinets (500 × 1000 mm)</strong> would need a 32 × 9 grid, which is impractical — so for rental, either use the near-16:9 grids in Section 9, or mix in 500 × 500 cabinets to trim the wall back to shape.</li></ul><p>The geometry is not fighting you. Each family lands on 16:9 in the size range it was designed for. You just have to know the grid.</p></div>

<hr><h2 id="6-worked-example-we-want-320-160-modules-for-an-entertainment-screen">6. Worked example: "We want 320 × 160 modules, for an entertainment screen"</h2><p>This is the most common brief we get, so let's run it all the way through. Entertainment means video, live feed and broadcast content — so 16:9 is not negotiable.</p><h3>Step 1 — the module is already chosen, and it's a 2:1 shape</h3><p>320 × 160 mm has a 2:1 ratio. On its own, that is awkward: to reach 16:9 from bare modules you need a grid where <code>columns ÷ rows = 8 ÷ 9</code> — that is <strong>8 across × 9 down</strong>, 72 modules, for a wall of only 2.56 m × 1.44 m. It works, but it is a lot of modules for a small screen and gives you no structural frame.</p><p><strong>This is exactly what cabinets are for.</strong> Put the modules in the right cabinet and the problem disappears.</p><h3>Step 2 — choose the cabinet: 640 × 480 mm</h3><div class="lm-tw"><table class="wrap"><thead><tr><th>Candidate cabinet</th><th>Modules</th><th>Cabinet shape</th><th>Smallest exact 16:9 grid</th><th>Verdict</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>640 × 480 mm</strong></td><td><strong>2 × 3 = 6</strong></td><td><strong>4:3</strong></td><td><strong>4 × 3 = 12 cabinets</strong></td><td><strong>Choose this</strong></td></tr><tr><td>640 × 960 mm</td><td>2 × 6 = 12</td><td>2:3</td><td>8 × 3 = 24 cabinets</td><td>Good alternative for tall builds</td></tr><tr><td>1280 × 960 mm</td><td>4 × 6 = 24</td><td>4:3</td><td>4 × 3 = 12 cabinets</td><td>Same shape, larger steps</td></tr><tr><td>640 × 640 mm</td><td>2 × 4 = 8</td><td>1:1</td><td>16 × 9 = 144 cabinets</td><td>Too coarse for indoor sizes</td></tr><tr><td>960 × 960 mm</td><td>3 × 6 = 18</td><td>1:1</td><td>16 × 9 = 144 cabinets</td><td>Outdoor cabinet — 15.36 m minimum</td></tr><tr><td>960 × 640 mm</td><td>3 × 4 = 12</td><td>3:2</td><td>32 × 27 = 864 cabinets</td><td>Avoid — never reaches 16:9 sensibly</td></tr></tbody></table></div>
<p><strong>640 × 480 mm is the ideal cabinet for a 320 × 160 module.</strong> It takes 6 modules (2 across, 3 down), it is 4:3 shaped, and it reaches exact 16:9 in a 4 × 3 grid of just 12 cabinets.</p></div>

It comes in two formats, and the difference between them matters for this discussion.</p><p><strong>COB in the conventional 320 × 160 mm module</strong> — this is available now, and it is the important one for most buyers. It is the same footprint as a standard SMD module, so it drops straight into the <strong>640 × 480 mm and 640 × 960 mm indoor cabinets</strong> described in Section 6. You get COB's durability and contrast, and you keep every exact-16:9 grid in this guide. Nothing about your sizing changes.</p><p><strong>COB in a 600 × 337.5 mm panel</strong> — a purpose-designed format, and worth understanding because of one number. <strong>600 ÷ 337.5 = 1.7778.</strong> The panel is <em>itself</em> exactly 16:9.</p><p>That single fact changes the whole calculation: <strong>any square grid of 600 × 337.5 mm panels is exactly 16:9.</strong> 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 4 × 4, 8 × 8 — you cannot get it wrong. There is no near-miss to manage and no tolerance to argue about.</p><figure class="fig"><svg viewBox="0 0 800 190" role="img" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><text x="20.0" y="22.0" font-size="12" As a rule of thumb, the pitch number in millimetres is the minimum viewing distance in metres, and viewers are comfortable at about 1.7 times that. Buying a finer pitch than your viewers can resolve costs more and adds nothing they can see.</p><h2 style="font-size:24px;line-height:1.3;margin:44px 0 12px;font-weight:700;">What pixel pitch actually means</h2><p style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 14px;">Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres from the centre of one pixel to the centre of the next. A P2.5 module has a pixel every 2.5 mm; a P10 module, one every 10 mm. That one number decides three things:</p><ul style="margin:0 0 16px;padding-left:22px;"><li style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 8px;"><strong style="color:rgb(11, 15, 25);">Resolution:</strong> a smaller pitch packs more pixels into every square metre, so the image is sharper.</li><li style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 8px;"><strong style="color:rgb(11, 15, 25);">Viewing distance:</strong> stand too close to a coarse pitch and you see dots, not a picture.</li><li style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;color:rgb(61, 68, 81);margin:0 0 8px;"><strong style="color:rgb(11, 15, 25);">LED count, and cost:</strong> pixels per square metre rise with the square of the pitch. Halve the pitch and you need four times the LEDs. Going from P2.5 to P1.5 takes you from 160,000 to about 444,000 pixels per m², roughly 2.8 times as many.</li></ul><figure style="margin:22px 0 26px;"><img
