Every week we meet a screen owner who saved 15% buying "imported Qiangli" modules from an unknown trader - and is now paying for it in dead panels, patchy colour and a seller who has stopped answering the phone. This is an honest breakdown of how the grey market works, why the maths never favours it, and what an authorized channel gives you that a parallel importer cannot.
How grey-market modules reach India
The components flooding marketplaces and wholesale hubs at "too good" prices usually travel one of three routes:

Under-invoiced imports
Consignments declared at a fraction of real value to evade customs duty and IGST. The "discount" you are offered is largely evaded tax - and that liability does not vanish, it moves down the chain. | ROUTE 2

Lookalike branding
Modules carrying the name of a reputed factory that never left that factory's line - copy PCBs with cheaper driver ICs and unbranded lamps, sold on a name the buyer trusts. |
In our experience a large share of the cheap "Qiangli" modules offered to Indian buyers through unofficial channels are not genuine Qiangli production at all. None of this is visible in a WhatsApp photo. A fake or refurbished module looks identical on day one. The differences appear at month three - and peak at month eighteen, when the seller is gone.
What actually goes wrong
Colour mismatch you cannot fix
Genuine factories bin their LEDs so every lamp in a batch is matched for wavelength and brightness. Grey stock mixes bins and production runs. The result is a screen like a patchwork quilt of slightly different whites - and when you buy "the same module" next year, it visibly will not match. A copy module advertised as "3840 Hz" often ships with lower-grade driver ICs that flicker on camera and drift in grayscale. Your client films their new screen for Instagram, sees rolling bands, and calls you. |
Early lamp death
Refurbished lamps and B-grade batches fail at multiples of the genuine rate. On a 20 sq m screen at P2.5 there are roughly 3.2 million lamps - even a 0.1% excess failure rate is thousands of dead points across your client's wall in year one. | No spares that match
LED screens are repaired module by module. Authorized stock means replacements from the same factory, matched to your batch, available next day. Grey stock means hunting a trader who has moved on to a different factory's lot - and nothing he sells you now will match your wall. |
The commercial risks nobody mentions
Zero warranty. The factory has no record of the sale, so the warranty conversation ends at the trader's shop shutter. Genuine channels carry factory-backed warranty, honoured here in India.
Tax exposure. Goods that entered on under-declared invoices are, plainly, goods on which duty was evaded. If the consignment or the seller comes under scrutiny, buyers holding improper invoices face blocked GST input credit and awkward questions. With a proper GST invoice - correct HSN, full value - your input credit is clean and your books are defensible.
Project liability. If you are an integrator, the screen carries your name. A ₹2 lakh saving on modules is a poor trade for a ₹20 lakh site that becomes a three-year service liability.
Resale and expansion value. Screens built on traceable, genuine components can be expanded, serviced and resold. Orphan screens cannot.
The maths: what does "15% cheaper" really cost?
Take a 15 sq m outdoor P4 screen - roughly 293 modules.

The headline saving is gone by the second service call - before counting downtime, reputation or tax risk. We have never once seen the grey-market route end up cheaper over a three-year life. Not once.
How to verify you are buying genuine
01 Ask for the authorization A genuine distributor can show current authorization from the factory. If the seller dodges this question, you have your answer. | 02 Check the paperwork Proper GST invoice, correct HSN codes, full declared value. "Bill nahi milega, cash rate hai" is not a discount - it is a warning. |
03 Ask for batch and datasheet Genuine stock comes with factory datasheets, batch and bin information, and consistent cartons. Ask for the spec sheet of the exact lot, not a brochure. | 04 Verify serials with the factory Genuine modules and controllers trace back to the production line. Fakes cannot survive this question. |
05 Ask about spares, in writing "Will you supply batch-matched replacement modules for this lot for the next two years?" A trader flipping containers cannot say yes and mean it. |
What an authorized channel does on the back end
The price on the module is the visible part. The invisible part is what keeps your screen earning.

A counterfeit weak link inside a genuine screen still takes the screen down. Grey-market modules are not a cheaper version of the same product. They are a different, worse product wearing the same jacket - subsidised by evaded tax, stripped of warranty, and priced to look attractive for exactly as long as it takes the container to clear. Your LED screen is a five to seven year asset. Buy it from a channel that will still be answering your calls in year five.
