The short answer: a grey-market module is not a cheaper copy of the same product. It is usually a different product: mixed LED bins, weaker driver ICs, no factory warranty and no matching spares. A 15% discount is wiped out once about 15 in every 100 modules need replacing, before you count service visits, downtime or the GST risk.
How grey-market modules reach India
Components sold at “too good to be true” prices usually travel one of three routes:
- Under-invoiced imports: consignments declared below their real value to cut customs duty and IGST. Much of the “discount” is evaded tax, and that liability moves down the chain to whoever holds the goods and the paperwork.
- B-grade and refurbished stock: factory-reject lots, end-of-line batches that failed brightness or calibration checks, and panels taken from dismantled screens with re-soldered lamps, sold as new.
- Lookalike branding: modules carrying a reputed factory’s name that never came off that factory’s line, often with cheaper driver ICs and unbranded lamps.
None of this shows up in a WhatsApp photo. A copy or refurbished module looks the same on day one. The differences appear in the months after installation.
What actually goes wrong
Colour you cannot fix. LED makers sort lamps into “bins” by colour wavelength and brightness, because even lamps from one production run vary slightly. Screens built from tightly binned lamps look even; mixed bins look blotchy (NanoLumens). Calibration can even out the difference only partly, and it costs brightness. A replacement module from a different lot will not match the wall.
Weaker driver ICs. A module advertised as “3840 Hz” may use lower-grade driver ICs that cannot hold that refresh rate at full brightness. The result is rolling bands on phone cameras and uneven greys in dark content.
Early lamp failures. The numbers add up fast. A 20 m² screen at P2.5 has 160,000 pixels per m², so 3.2 million pixels. Every extra 0.1% failure rate is about 3,200 more dead points across the wall.
No spares that match. LED screens are repaired module by module. Genuine supply means replacements from the same factory and, ideally, the same batch. Grey stock means hunting for a trader whose next container came from a different lot.
The commercial risks
- No factory warranty: the factory has no record of the sale, so there is no one to claim against except the trader.
- GST input credit: under Section 16(2) of the CGST Act, input tax credit depends on, among other things, the supplier’s invoice appearing in your GSTR-2B and the supplier actually paying the tax. If they do not, the credit can be reversed with interest under Section 41(2) (TaxGuru). A correct GST invoice with the right HSN code and full value protects you.
- Project liability: for an integrator, the screen carries your name. A small saving on modules is a poor trade for a site that becomes years of service calls.
- Resale and expansion: screens built on traceable, genuine components can be extended, serviced and resold. Orphan screens cannot.
The break-even maths
Say a grey-market module is 15% cheaper. On 100 modules you save the price of 15 genuine ones. Every extra module you have to replace eats into that saving. Replace 15 extra modules and the saving is gone; beyond that, the cheaper screen costs you more. That is before the cost of service visits, downtime, and colour patches where the replacements do not match.
Five checks before you buy
- Ask for the authorisation. A genuine distributor can show current authorisation from the factory.
- Check the paperwork. A proper GST invoice with the correct HSN code and full declared value. “No bill, cash rate” is not a discount, it is a warning.
- Ask for the datasheet and batch. Genuine stock comes with the factory datasheet, batch and bin details, and consistent cartons. Ask for the spec sheet of the exact lot, not a brochure.
- Verify with the factory. Genuine modules and controllers trace back to the production line.
- Get spares promised in writing. “Will you supply batch-matched replacement modules for this lot for the next two years?”

The bottom line: grey-market modules are priced to look attractive for as long as it takes the container to clear. Your LED screen is a five to seven year asset. Buy it from a channel that will still answer your calls in year five.
